Thursday, Nov 26: work back from dinner time
How to use this list
Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and almost every plan that goes wrong goes wrong because of one date: the day the turkey starts thawing. So this checklist works backward from dinner. First, pick your dinner time and your guest count; USDA suggests about 1 pound of turkey per person. That gives you a turkey size, and the size gives you two dates: when the frozen bird has to move into the refrigerator (USDA allows about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds) and what time it has to go into the oven on Thursday. Everything else fits around those two fixed points. Use the menu section to decide what you are cooking and what guests are bringing, then tick the shopping list in two trips: shelf-stable items two weeks out, fresh produce and dairy the weekend before. The countdown section has real dates for 2026, so you can copy them into your calendar. On the day, the only number that matters is the thermometer: 165 °F in the thickest part of the breast and the innermost thigh and wing. Your ticks are saved in this browser, and Share sends a copy of the list to anyone helping you cook.
Most often forgotten
- Starting the thaw too late. A 20 lb frozen turkey needs to be in the fridge by the Saturday before (USDA: 4 to 5 days for 16–20 lb).
- No room in the fridge for the thawing bird, the brine, and the make-ahead sides at the same time.
- Counting oven time but not oven space: sides, rolls and pies all want the oven while the turkey is in it.
- No food thermometer. The USDA doneness test is 165 °F on a thermometer, in the thigh, the wing and the thickest part of the breast.
- Leftovers sitting out through dessert. USDA says refrigerate within 2 hours.
- Not writing down who is bringing which dish, so you end up with three pies and no rolls.
